University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPT) has published its ambitious new digital strategy, outlining a forward-thinking vision that aligns with the national What Good Looks Like (WGLL) framework. The plan marks a significant step forward from the Trust’s 2021 strategy, building on recent successes such as the One Devon EPR programme, major software implementations in key departments, and a Trust-wide move to Microsoft Office 365.

The new strategy is centred on optimising operational efficiency and clinical safety by fully leveraging key investments, most notably the upcoming Epic Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system. By standardising digital services and hardware, the Trust aims to create a unified and resilient digital workplace.

A key pillar of the strategy is a commitment to co-designing digital solutions with clinical teams and patients. Access to services will be simplified through integration with the NHS App and Epic’s MyChart patient portal, creating a seamless "digital front door" for patients to view their health data and engage with services like remote monitoring and virtual consultations.

Embracing Innovation and Smart Technology

The plan places a strong emphasis on innovation, particularly the integration of Artificial Intelligence. UHPT has committed to establishing robust frameworks to safely utilise AI technologies to enhance EPR functionality, optimise scheduling, and improve operational efficiency. This includes exploring the use of Ambient AI in consultations and supporting the adoption of new tools in specialised areas like teledermatology and cancer care.

Furthermore, the strategy highlights a deep collaboration with the Trust’s estates department on the development of smart buildings. Future hospital projects will be equipped with cutting-edge digital solutions, including:

  • Smart lighting systems to improve patient wellbeing.

  • Internet of Things (IoT) sensors to monitor patient activity and support falls prediction.

  • Centralised asset tracking and real-time location services.

  • The creation of a digital twin of hospital buildings to simulate and optimise facility management.

By advancing these initiatives, UHPT is not only enhancing its digital maturity but also paving the way for a more efficient, resilient, and patient-centred future for healthcare across the region. University Hospitals Plymouth publishes digital strategic intent plans – HTN Health Tech News
