Innovation Projects

Smart Wards Initiative

The Smart Ward Initiative is a pioneering project spanning both Healthcare of the Elderly and Paediatrics, focused on piloting a range of smart building technologies. From air quality monitoring and single-patient cubicle observation systems to wearable devices and virtual windows, the initiative aims to transform the traditional ward environment. These technologies are being deployed as part of academic service evaluations, with the goal of creating evidence-based improvements in patient care, staff wellbeing, and overall ward efficiency. This project represents a step toward redefining how clinical environments are designed and experienced.

AI Guide Books

The AI Guidebooks were developed to provide clear, accessible, and clinically relevant information on a variety of artificial intelligence topics. Designed to support learning, awareness, and confidence among healthcare professionals, the guidebooks break down complex AI concepts into simple, digestible guidance. Now rolled out at scale across internal and external teams, they have become a valuable educational tool, helping to build digital literacy and readiness for emerging AI technologies within the Trust and beyond.

AI Translate Pilot

The AI Translate Pilot is currently trialling an AI-powered translation device across the OneDevon network. The aim is to evaluate its impact in clinical settings by improving patient communication, reducing reliance on traditional interpretation services, and enhancing overall patient experience. In addition to improving accessibility, the pilot seeks to assess the potential for significant cost savings and operational efficiency. Insights from this trial will help inform the broader adoption of AI-assisted communication tools in healthcare.

Next-Gen Robots

This project is piloting an advanced UV-C cleaning robot equipped with a next-generation, patented algorithm designed to optimise disinfection. The robot represents a leap forward in healthcare cleaning technology, offering greater efficiency, precision, and consistency in maintaining sterile environments. With the potential to reduce infection risks, improve safety, and streamline cleaning operations, this pilot is part of a broader effort to integrate cutting-edge automation into hospital infrastructure.
